Even the most modern of weddings follow formal traditions. The content may be very much 21st century, but the structure remains firmly traditional - and that includes the order of the speeches. So here's a quick run down of who does what and when at the reception.
The speeches are typically held after deserts and with coffee. As an introduction, the Toast Master or Best Man introduces the Father of the Bride. This is very much an introduction only, so keep it short and to the point. The Father of the Bride's speech isn't normally the main event (the Best Man gets to have all the fun), and tradition suggests he welcomes the Bride Groom's parents, the relatives and finally welcome the Groom to his family. But more importantly he would say a few words about hs daughter and finish by toasting the health and hapiness of the Bride and Bridegroom.
Next up is the Groom. He'll reply on behalf of himself and his Bride, then thank everyone for their gifts (presumptious, but traditional!). Again, this doesn't have to be a long speech, but should finish by presenting gifts to and toasting the bridesmaids before handing over to the Best Man. The Best Man should then reply on behalf of the bridesmaids and then entertain the guest with a witty speech. Or at least attempt to. The one break from tradition is the Bride's and Bridesmaids speeches which are becoming popular - and with these anything goes!
